Target Information
CD36, also known as scavenger receptor class B member 3, is a surface protein expressed on macrophages, platelets, and adipocytes. It plays roles in lipid metabolism, inflammation, and atherosclerosis, and mediates recognition and uptake of oxidized LDL, long-chain fatty acids, and apoptotic cells. CD36 is also involved in malaria pathogenesis and serves as a receptor for thrombospondin. Mutations in CD36 cause platelet glycoprotein deficiency. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist for this gene. Diseases associated with CD36 include Platelet Glycoprotein IV Deficiency and Coronary Heart Disease 7.
