Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the transient receptor potential (TRP) protein family, which includes ion channels with structural features typical of this group. TRPM5 plays an important role in taste transduction and functions as a calcium-activated, non-selective cation channel that conducts Na⁺, K⁺, and Cs⁺ ions equally well, but not Ca²⁺ ions. It is activated by low intracellular Ca²⁺ concentrations and inhibited by higher levels. TRPM5 is also temperature-sensitive, showing a steep increase in inward currents between 15–35°C. The gene is located within the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome critical region-1 on chromosome 11p15.5 and is imprinted, being expressed exclusively from the paternal allele.
