XPD is involved in the nucleotide excision repair pathway, a mechanism to repair DNA damage.
This protein is part of the basal transcription factor BTF2/TFIIH complex and exhibits ATP-dependent DNA helicase activity, belonging to the RAD3/XPD subfamily of helicases.
Defects in this gene can lead to xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group D, trichothiodystrophy, and Cockayne syndrome.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
