Target Information

TGF beta-1 (TGFB1, Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1) is a cytokine belonging to the transforming growth factor beta superfamily, found ubiquitously in tissues. It is stored in the extracellular matrix as a latent complex with its pro-domain. Activation involves binding of αV integrin to an RGD sequence and mechanical force exerted on the latent complex, which is anchored by latent TGF-beta binding proteins (LTBP).

Latent forms consist of TGF beta-1, its amino-terminal latency-associated peptide (LAP), and LTBP. TGF beta-1 regulates proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, and migration in various cell types. It interacts with TGF beta receptors and modulates multiple growth factors both positively and negatively.

The mature TGF beta-1 peptide can exist as homodimers or heterodimers with other family members. Gene upregulation is often observed in tumor cells, and mutations are associated with Camurati-Engelmann disease and cystic fibrosis.
