Target Information
AIRE is a transcriptional regulator protein that binds DNA as a dimer and tetramer, and may regulate gene expression. It is a nuclear protein with 545 amino acids containing an HSR domain, two PHD-type zinc fingers, and a SAND domain. AIRE may form homodimers, homotetramers, and nuclear bodies, interacting with transcriptional coactivators CBP and CREBBP. Three isoforms are reported, one predicted to be a candidate for nuclear-mediated decay (NMD). AIRE plays a role in immune regulation and mediates E3 ubiquitin ligase activity. Mutations in AIRE cause autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED).
