Target Information
The membrane-associated protein encoded by this gene is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes and are divided into seven distinct subfamilies. ABCB6 belongs to the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is involved in multidrug resistance and antigen presentation. This half-transporter likely plays a role in mitochondrial function and is localized to chromosome 2q26. It is considered a candidate gene for lethal neonatal metabolic syndrome, a disorder of mitochondrial function.
