Target Information
The CES1 gene encodes a member of the carboxylesterase large family, responsible for hydrolysis or transesterification of xenobiotics (e.g., cocaine, heroin) and endogenous substrates with ester, thioester, or amide bonds.
These enzymes may participate in fatty acyl and cholesterol ester metabolism and play a role in the blood-brain barrier system.
CES1 is a major liver enzyme involved in drug clearance. Mutations can cause carboxylesterase 1 deficiency. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
