Target Information

The KISS1 gene functions as a metastasis suppressor, inhibiting metastases of melanomas and breast carcinomas without affecting tumorigenicity. The encoded protein may reduce chemotaxis and invasion, thereby attenuating metastasis in malignant melanomas.
Studies indicate its role in regulating cell-matrix adhesion events, possibly involving cytoskeletal reorganization. The protein product, kisspeptin, stimulates GnRH-induced gonadotropin secretion and regulates pubertal activation of GnRH neurons.
A polymorphism in the terminal exon of this mRNA produces two isoforms; when an adenosine is absent at the polymorphic site, a downstream stop codon is used, resulting in a protein extended by seven amino acids.
