Target Information
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that catalyzes the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions. It is abundant in all mammalian tissues.
CA IX is one of the most hypoxia-inducible genes, regulated by HIF-1α, and is stable within the membrane. Carbonic anhydrases play a key role in pH regulation by controlling hydrogen ion flux.
Under hypoxic conditions, inhibition of CA IX can increase cell death, making CA IX a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia.
