Target Information
Caspases are cysteine proteases expressed as inactive precursors that mediate apoptosis by proteolysis of specific substrates. They cleave after aspartic acid residues and are divided into initiator caspases (activated by receptor clustering, e.g., Caspase-8 and Caspase-9) and effector caspases (activated by mitochondrial permeability transition, e.g., Caspase-3 and Caspase-7). Initiator caspases activate effector caspases, leading to cell collapse and apoptosis progression.
