Target Information
This gene encodes a testis-specific differentiation antigen, acrosomal vesicle protein 1, which arises within the acrosomal vesicle during spermatogenesis. It is associated with the acrosomal membranes and matrix of mature sperm. The gene consists of four exons, and alternative splicing generates multiple transcripts encoding isoforms ranging from 81 to 265 amino acids.
The longest transcript represents 53–72% of total acrosomal vesicle protein 1 messages, the second largest 15–32%, the third 3.4–8.3%, and the fourth 8.7–12.5%. Remaining transcripts account for less than 1%. Cryptic splicing and exon skipping are suggested to occur within this gene. Acrosomal vesicle protein 1 may be involved in sperm–zona binding or penetration and is a potential contraceptive vaccine immunogen for humans.
