Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein present in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It has four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, suggesting involvement in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. It also plays roles in short- and long-term synaptic plasticity. Synaptophysin is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and differentiation of neuroendocrine tumors. Mutations in the gene may lead to X-linked mental retardation.
