Target Information

This gene encodes a protein that interacts with the N-terminal region of BRCA1. It binds BRCA1 both in vivo and in vitro and shares homology with the two most conserved BRCA1 regions: the N-terminal RING motif and the C-terminal BRCT domain. The RING motif, a cysteine-rich sequence, is found in proteins regulating cell growth, including tumor suppressor and proto-oncogene products. This protein also contains three tandem ankyrin repeats. The BARD1/BRCA1 interaction is disrupted by tumorigenic amino acid substitutions in BRCA1, suggesting that stable complex formation between these proteins is essential for BRCA1 tumor suppression. This protein may be a target of oncogenic mutations in breast or ovarian cancer.
