Background
This gene is ubiquitously expressed and functions as a transcriptional coactivator for many transcription factors. Initially identified as a nuclear protein binding to CREB, CBP plays essential roles in embryonic development, growth control, and homeostasis by linking chromatin remodeling to transcription factor recognition. The encoded protein possesses intrinsic histone acetyltransferase activity and serves as a scaffold stabilizing protein interactions within transcription complexes. It acetylates both histone and non-histone proteins and shares high sequence similarity with p300 in several functional domains. Mutations in this gene are associated with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS).
