Background
Alpha-2-adrenergic receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily and include three subtypes: alpha2A, alpha2B, and alpha2C. These receptors play a critical role in regulating neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerves and central adrenergic neurons. Studies in mice have shown that both alpha2A and alpha2C subtypes are essential for normal presynaptic control of transmitter release. The alpha2A subtype inhibits release at high stimulation frequencies, while the alpha2C subtype modulates neurotransmission at lower activity levels. This gene encodes the alpha2C subtype, which lacks introns in both its coding and untranslated regions. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
