Background
Aquaporins contain two tandem repeats, each with three membrane-spanning domains and a pore-forming loop featuring the signature motif Asn-Pro-Ala (NPA). These proteins facilitate the transport of water and small neutral solutes across cell membranes. AQP12 belongs to the MIP/aquaporin family, specifically the AQP11/AQP12 subfamily, and is primarily expressed in the pancreas.
