Background
This gene belongs to the mitochondrial carrier subfamily of solute carrier protein genes. The protein functions as a gated pore, transporting ADP from the cytoplasm into the mitochondrial matrix and ATP in the reverse direction. It is involved in the permeability transition pore complex (PTPC), which regulates mitochondrial product release and apoptosis induction. Several non-transcribed pseudogenes of this gene exist in the human genome. (RefSeq, Jun 2013)
