Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a regulatory subunit of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. It is a key energy-sensing enzyme that monitors cellular energy status. Upon metabolic stress, AMPK is activated and phosphorylates/inactivates acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), which are essential for fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. The beta1 subunit may act as a positive regulator of AMPK activity, and its myristoylation and phosphorylation influence enzyme activity and localization. It may also serve as an adaptor molecule mediating AMPK complex assembly.
