Background
This gene encodes a protein that is a member of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) protein family. It functions similarly to ubiquitin by being covalently attached to target proteins as part of a post-translational modification system. Unlike ubiquitin, which targets proteins for degradation, SUMO proteins are involved in diverse cellular processes such as nuclear transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, and protein stability. The protein becomes active only after cleavage of the last two amino acids at the carboxy-terminus. Multiple pseudogenes and alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
