Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the serine/arginine (SR)-rich family of pre-mRNA splicing factors, which are components of the spliceosome. Each factor contains an RNA recognition motif (RRM) for RNA binding and an RS domain for protein-protein interactions. The RS domain, rich in serine and arginine residues, facilitates interactions between SR splicing factors. These proteins are essential for mRNA splicing and are also involved in mRNA export from the nucleus and translation. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene. (RefSeq, Sep 2010)
