Background

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the serine/threonine protein kinase family and acts as the catalytic subunit of the 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK functions as a cellular energy sensor conserved across eukaryotic cells. Its kinase activity is triggered by stimuli that elevate the cellular AMP/ATP ratio. AMPK regulates key metabolic enzymes through phosphorylation, protecting cells from ATP depletion by inhibiting ATP-consuming biosynthetic pathways. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been observed.
