Background

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by periodic changes in protein abundance throughout the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases, and distinct cyclins show specific expression and degradation patterns that coordinate mitotic events. Cyclin D1 forms a complex with CDK4 or CDK6, essential for G1/S transition, and interacts with tumor suppressor protein Rb. Its expression is positively regulated by Rb. Mutations, amplification, and overexpression of this gene are frequently observed in various tumors and may contribute to tumorigenesis.
