Background

This gene encodes a member of the serine/threonine protein kinases family and belongs to the Ca²⁺/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases subfamily. Calcium signaling plays a critical role in synaptic plasticity at glutamatergic synapses. The kinase consists of four subunits: α, β, γ, and δ. The α chain is essential for hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) and spatial learning. In addition to CaM-dependent activity, this protein can undergo autophosphorylation, leading to CaM-independent activation. Two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Nov 2008).
