Target Information
SLC30A8 (ZnT-8) is a zinc efflux transporter involved in zinc accumulation within intracellular vesicles. It is highly expressed in the pancreas, particularly in the islets of Langerhans, and co-localizes with insulin in secretory granules of insulin-secreting INS-1 cells.
Allelic variants of SLC30A8 are major genetic risk factors for Type 2 diabetes, while no association has been identified with Type 1 diabetes. Expression in β-cells is influenced by cytokines such as IFN-γ and IL-1β.
