Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. This gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S19E family. Located in the cytoplasm, mutations in this gene cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia—a disorder characterized by reduced erythroid precursors. This suggests an additional role in erythropoietic differentiation and proliferation beyond its ribosomal function. Elevated expression of RPS19 has been observed in some primary colon carcinomas compared to normal tissues. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
