Target Information
CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and various epithelial cells. It acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays roles in cell-cell interaction, adhesion, and migration.
CD44 is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression levels can increase in certain carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential.
Multiple isoforms exist due to complex alternative splicing, contributing to structural and functional diversity.
Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and the protein may be related to tumor metastasis formation.
