Intracellular mechanism: Inhibition of pro-survival pathways and activation of Fas-mediated apoptosis.
Extracellular mechanism: Secreted form binds to GRP78 on the cell surface, activating the extrinsic apoptotic pathway.
Located on human chromosome 12q21, this gene is often deleted or mutated in various tumors and plays a role in age-related disease progression.
