Target Information
Nucleocytoplasmic transport is a signal- and energy-dependent process that occurs through nuclear pore complexes in the nuclear envelope. Proteins with a nuclear localization signal (NLS) require importin alpha and beta subunits (karyopherins) for transport. Importin alpha binds the NLS-containing cargo, while importin beta docks the complex at the pore. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTPase, the complex translocates into the nucleus, where importin subunits dissociate. Importin alpha enters the nucleoplasm with the cargo, and importin beta remains at the pore. Interactions between importin beta and FG repeats of nucleoporins are essential for translocation. The encoded protein belongs to the importin beta family.
