DIABLO (Smac)은 미토콘드리아 단백질로, 다양한 형태의 세포사멸(apoptosis)을 활성화합니다. 이는 apoptosis 억제 단백질(IAP) 계열의 중화에 의한 것으로 보입니다. 세포사멸 자극 시 Smac은 미토콘드리아에서 세포질로 이동하며, 미토콘드리아 매개 세포사멸은 동물 발달 및 조직 항상성에 중요합니다. 이러한 과정의 이상은 다양한 악성 질환을 유발할 수 있습니다. 또한 Smac/DIABLO는 암세포의 세포사멸 민감성(면역 또는 약물 유도)에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
