Target Information
The protein encoded by AGT (angiotensinogen precursor) is expressed in the liver and is cleaved by renin in response to lowered blood pressure. The resulting product, angiotensin I, is further processed by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) to form angiotensin II, a physiologically active peptide involved in blood pressure regulation.
Mutations in this gene are associated with essential hypertension, renal tubular dysgenesis, atrial fibrillation, and inflammatory bowel disease.
