Target Information
Alpha-2-adrenergic receptors belong to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily and include three subtypes: alpha2A, alpha2B, and alpha2C. These receptors regulate neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerves and adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system. The alpha2B subtype associates with eIF-2B, a guanine nucleotide exchange protein involved in translation regulation.
A polymorphic variant lacking three glutamic acids shows decreased phosphorylation and desensitization, associated with reduced basal metabolic rate in obese subjects, potentially contributing to obesity pathogenesis. The alpha2B adrenergic receptor gene contains no introns in either coding or untranslated sequences.
