Product Specific Information

In the human genome, the IFN-omega gene family consists of seven members located on chromosome 9. Only one of these genes is functional, producing the IFN-omega protein, while the others are pseudogenes. The IFN-omega gene is not expressed in unstimulated cells but is induced by viral infection. The resulting N-glycosylated protein consists of 172 or 174 amino acids with an apparent molecular mass of approximately 25 kDa. A single carbohydrate group mainly consists of biantennary complex oligosaccharides with variable amounts of N-acetyl neuraminic acid. Quantitatively, IFN-omega is a major component of human leukocyte IFN, contributing approximately 10–15% to total antiviral activity.

Target Information

IFN-omega is a type I interferon induced by virus-infected leukocytes. Members of the type I interferon family, including IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, and IFN-omega, signal through the IFNAR-1/IFNAR-2 receptor complex and exhibit antiviral and antiproliferative activities. IFN-omega shares about 75% sequence homology with IFN-alpha and contains two conserved disulfide bonds essential for full biological activity.
