Target Information

Glutamine synthase (GLUL) belongs to the glutamine synthetase family. In animals, ammonia incorporation occurs through the actions of glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamine synthase. Glutamate serves as both a nitrogen donor and acceptor, playing a central role in mammalian nitrogen metabolism and neurotransmitter regulation. GS activity is tightly regulated, including by adenylylation. Its activity is known to decrease in the cerebral cortex of Alzheimer’s disease brains and under glucose deprivation conditions.
