Target Information
Heterogeneous nuclear RNAs (hnRNAs), including mRNA precursors and mature mRNAs, are associated with specific proteins to form heterogeneous ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) complexes. Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein L (HNRNPL) is among the proteins stably associated with hnRNP complexes and plays a major role in the formation, packaging, processing, and function of mRNA. It is present in the nucleoplasm as part of the HNRP complex but also identified outside the nucleus. Exchange of hnRNP for mRNA-binding proteins accompanies mRNA transport from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. Since hnRNP proteins shuttle between these compartments, they may also have cytoplasmic functions. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
