Target Information

Conventional kinesin is a tetrameric molecule composed of two heavy chains and two light chains that transport various cargos along microtubules toward their plus ends. The heavy chains provide motor activity, while the light chains bind to cargos.
This gene encodes a member of the kinesin light chain family, which associates with kinesin heavy chain through an N-terminal domain. Six tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) motifs are involved in cargo binding such as vesicles, mitochondria, and the Golgi complex.
Kinesin light chains function as adapter molecules rather than motors. Although previously named "kinesin 2", this gene is not part of the kinesin-2 heavy chain subfamily. Extensive alternative splicing produces isoforms with different C-termini proposed to bind different cargos; however, the full-length nature of some variants has not been determined.
