Target Information

The sodium channel protein type 8 subunit alpha (Na⁺ CP type VIII alpha) is a multi-pass, transmembrane protein that mediates sodium ion permeability of excitable membranes. Voltage-gated sodium channels consist of a pore-forming alpha subunit and two beta subunits (beta1 and beta2).
The beta subunits modulate channel expression, gating, and also act as cell adhesion molecules.
Type I and III alpha subunits are mainly expressed in neuronal cell bodies and proximal processes, while type II alpha subunits are abundant along axons.
Sodium channels are essential for rapid signal transduction and neuronal development.
Defects in the SCN8A gene can lead to impaired motoneuron growth, progressive paralysis, and early death.
