PEX5 binds to the C-terminal PTS1-type tripeptide peroxisomal targeting signal (SKL-type) and is essential for peroxisomal protein import.
Peroxins (PEXs) are crucial for the assembly of functional peroxisomes.
Mutations in this gene are associated with neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy (NALD), Zellweger syndrome (ZWS), and infantile Refsum disease (IRD).
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
