Target Information
Steroid receptors are ligand-dependent intracellular proteins that regulate transcription of specific genes by binding to DNA sequences after activation by hormones. Before activation, steroid receptors form complexes with various proteins such as HSP70, HSP90, and immunophilins (FKBP52, FKBP54, CyP-40), as well as p23, p60, and p48.
p23, together with HSP70, HSP90, and p60, associates transiently with the progesterone receptor (PR). The cloned human p23 encodes a 160-amino-acid protein highly conserved across species and lacking homology to other known proteins. It is an acidic phosphoprotein with a C-terminal domain rich in aspartic acid and multiple phosphorylation sites. In vitro, p23 binds to HSP90 and is essential for HSP90 and CyP-40 binding to PR, suggesting an important role in PR function.
