Target Information
CD36, also known as scavenger receptor class B member 3, is a membrane protein expressed on various cell types such as macrophages, platelets, and adipocytes. It plays important roles in lipid metabolism, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. CD36 recognizes and uptakes oxidized low-density lipoproteins, long-chain fatty acids, and apoptotic cells, and is implicated in malaria pathogenesis. It acts as a receptor for thrombospondin and mediates binding to collagen, thrombospondin, anionic phospholipids, and oxidized LDL. Mutations in this gene cause platelet glycoprotein deficiency. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist. Diseases associated with CD36 include Platelet Glycoprotein IV Deficiency and Coronary Heart Disease 7.
