Target Information
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter found throughout the central nervous system. It is formed by the decarboxylation of glutamate and binds to GABA-A or GABA-B receptors.
Binding of GABA to GABA-A receptors increases chloride ion influx into neurons, leading to inhibition of signal transmission.
Deficiency in GABA-mediated signaling can cause blackouts, muscle contractions, seizures, and epilepsy.
