Target Information
IL-16 encodes a pleiotropic cytokine functioning as:
- A chemoattractant
- A modulator of T cell activation
- An inhibitor of HIV replication
The signaling process is mediated by CD4. IL-16 undergoes proteolytic processing yielding two functional proteins:
- The secreted C-terminal peptide (cytokine function)
- The N-terminal product (may play a role in cell cycle control)
Caspase 3 is involved in proteolytic processing. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
