Target Information
Constant region of immunoglobulin heavy chains. Immunoglobulins (antibodies) are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes.
In humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins act as receptors that trigger clonal expansion and differentiation into plasma cells upon antigen binding.
Secreted immunoglobulins mediate the effector phase, leading to antigen elimination (PubMed:22158414, PubMed:20176268).
Each immunoglobulin has two antigen binding sites formed by the variable domains of heavy and light chains.
These domains undergo V-(D)-J rearrangement and somatic hypermutation, enabling affinity maturation after antigen exposure (PubMed:17576170, PubMed:20176268).
