Target Information
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are a family of secreted signaling molecules that induce ectopic bone growth. Many BMPs belong to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFB) superfamily. BMPs were first identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo. BMP7 is expressed early in embryogenesis and is thought to play a role in early development. Its similarity to BMP5 and BMP6 suggests possible bone inductive activity.
