Target Information
Three distinct signaling pathways lead to programmed cell death (apoptosis): death receptor, mitochondrion, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathways. Caspase-12 is involved in the ER stress pathway and is localized to the ER but not to the cytoplasm or mitochondria. It is activated by ER stress, including disruption of calcium homeostasis, and mediates ER stress-induced apoptosis. Caspase-12 co-localizes with proteins involved in Alzheimer’s disease such as gamma-secretase presenilin and beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP), and mediates amyloid-beta-induced cytotoxicity. Caspase-12 is ubiquitously expressed in mouse tissues.
