Target Information
This gene is part of the protocadherin alpha gene cluster, one of three related clusters on chromosome 5 with a genomic organization similar to B-cell and T-cell receptor gene clusters.
The alpha cluster includes 15 cadherin superfamily genes (13 highly similar and 2 distantly related). Each gene contains large N-terminal exons encoding six cadherin ectodomains and shared C-terminal exons encoding the cytoplasmic domain.
These neural cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins are integral membrane proteins that play critical roles in establishing and maintaining specific cell-cell connections in the brain.
Alternative splicing and additional variants have been observed, though their full-length sequences remain undetermined.
