Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (MERS), or EMC/2012, is a species of coronavirus which infects humans, bats, and camels.
This virus is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus that enters host cells by binding to the DPP4 receptor.
The absence of all four MERS-CoV accessory ORFs (deletion of ORF3, -4a, -4b, and -5 [dORF3–5]) has major implications for viral replication and pathogenesis.
