UBE2E1 catalyzes the covalent attachment of ubiquitin to other proteins and mediates the selective degradation of short-lived and abnormal proteins.
The modification of proteins with ubiquitin is a crucial cellular mechanism for targeting abnormal or short-lived proteins for degradation.
Ubiquitination involves three classes of enzymes:
- E1 – Ubiquitin-activating enzymes
- E2 – Ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes
- E3 – Ubiquitin-protein ligases
This gene encodes a member of the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
