Target Information

CD2 (LFA-2) is a monomeric surface antigen (MW 45–58 kDa) of the human T-lymphocyte lineage expressed on all peripheral blood T cells. It is one of the earliest T-cell markers, present on more than 95% of thymocytes, and found on some natural killer cells but not on B lymphocytes.
Monoclonal antibodies against CD2 inhibit rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes, indicating CD2’s role as or association with the erythrocyte receptor.
The CD2–CD58 interaction stabilizes adhesion between T cells and antigen-presenting or target cells. Although the affinity between CD2 and CD58 is relatively low in solution, it is enhanced within the cell-cell interface to ensure tight adhesion.
T cell activation increases CD2 expression and mobility, facilitating CD2–CD58 contact and strengthening intercellular adhesion. CD2 deficiency is linked to reduced intestinal inflammation and improved infection control.
Diseases associated with CD2 dysfunction include penis squamous cell carcinoma and immune deficiency due to thymic absence.
