Target Information
This gene encodes a neuropeptide widely expressed in the central nervous system. It influences multiple physiological processes including cortical excitability, stress response, food intake, circadian rhythms, and cardiovascular function. The neuropeptide acts through G protein-coupled receptors to inhibit adenylyl cyclase, activate MAP kinase, regulate intracellular calcium, and activate potassium channels. A polymorphism causing a leucine-to-proline change in the signal peptide is linked to elevated cholesterol, increased alcohol consumption, and potential risk for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.
