Product Specific Information
This antibody detects endogenous protein at molecular weights of 65 and 67 kDa.
Purity is >95% by SDS-PAGE.
Target Information
GAD-65 and GAD-67 are members of the group II decarboxylase family and catalyze the rate-limiting step in the production of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) from L-glutamic acid.
Both GADs are found in the brain:
- GAD-65 localizes to synaptic vesicle membranes in nerve terminals.
- GAD-67 is distributed throughout the cell and maintains basal GABA synthesis.
During increased neurotransmission demand, GAD-65 transiently activates to assist in GABA production.
Loss of GAD-65 impairs GABA neurotransmission, while loss of GAD-67 is lethal.
Alternative splicing produces two isoforms of GAD-67: predominant GAD-67 and minor GAD-25.
